Chemical peels for acne and bacne
For oily, acne-prone skin, a salicylic peel works inside the pore and calms the skin between breakouts. For the dark marks that breakouts leave, a medium peel can lighten them over a series.

Before, during and after a chemical peel

Stop retinol and exfoliating acids three to five days before. Avoid facial waxing that week, and avoid sunburn before your visit.
- 2The peel
Your skin is cleansed, then the peel is applied. It tingles or feels warm for a few minutes before it is removed or neutralized.
- 3Peeling phase
Light peels cause mild flaking for a day or two. Medium peels peel for about three to seven days. Do not pull at loose skin.
- 4Sun care
Wear SPF 30 or higher every day while you heal. New skin burns and darkens more easily.
Who should wait before a chemical peel
Most skin types can have a peel when it is matched to the skin. Tell your provider first if any of these apply, as you may need to wait:
- You have a sunburn, a rash or a cold sore on your face.
- You took isotretinoin, an oral acne medication, in the past six months.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding. Some acids are not used during this time, so your provider selects a gentler option.
- You waxed, threaded or used a hair-removal cream on your face in the past week.
Call the clinic if you see blisters, oozing or signs of infection while you heal.
